Routing characteristics of ad hoc networks with unidirectional links

چکیده
Unidirectional links in an ad hoc network can result from factors such as heterogeneity of receiver and transmitter hardware, power control or topology control algorithms, or differing sources of interference or jamming. Previously proposed metrics for evaluating the difficulty of a unidirectional scenario are limited in scope and are frequently misleading. To be able to analyze ad hoc network routing protocol behavior in a complex networking environment, it is not sufficient to merely assign a single level of difficulty to a unidirectional network scenario; the many interrelated routing characteristics of these scenarios must be understood. In this paper, we develop a set of metrics for describing these characteristics, for example for characterizing routing scenarios in simulations, analysis, and testbed implementations. Based on these metrics, we perform a detailed simulation analysis of the routing characteristics of the three most common simulation models for generating unidirectional links in ad hoc networks: the random-power model, the two-power model, and the three-power model. Our findings enable protocol designers to better choose a set of network scenarios and parameters that truly explore a wide range of a routing protocol s behaviors in the presence of unidirectional links, and to better understand the complex interplay between routing mechanisms and network conditions. 2004 Elsevier B.V. Energy Efficient Routing in Mobile Ad Hoc Networks by Using Honey Bee Mating Optimization
Mobile Ad hoc networks (MANETs) are composed of mobile stations communicating through wireless links, without any fixed backbone support. In these networks, limited power energy supply, and frequent topology changes caused by node mobility, makes their routing a challenging problem. TORA is one of the routing protocols that successfully copes with the nodes’ mobility side effects, but it do...

متن کاملA Routing Algorithm for Wireless Ad Hoc Networks with Unidirectional Links
Most of the routing algorithms for ad hoc networks assume that all wireless links are bidirectional. In reality, some links may be unidirectional. In this paper we show that the presence of such links can jeopardize the performance of the existing distance vector routing algorithms. We also present modi cations to distance vector based routing algorithms to make them work in ad hoc networks wit...
متن کاملAn Efficient Cluster-Based Routing Algorithm in Ad Hoc Networks with Unidirectional Links
Mobile ad hoc networks are dynamically organized by a collection of wireless mobile nodes. The mobile nodes in ad hoc networks can move arbitrarily thus the topology of network changes dynamically. Due to the properties of communication medium in wireless networks, unidirectional links may exist between mobile nodes thus results in the difficulty of link utilization and routing. In this paper, ...
متن کاملOn-demand multicast routing in ad hoc networks with unidirectional links
Many techniques used by routing protocols for ad hoc networks assume that links in the network can be used equally well in both directions between the two endpoint nodes of the link. However, there are many real-world situations in which wireless links may physically work in only one direction, resulting in degradation of routing performance in the network. In this paper, we present the first s...
